What resources are available and what types of therapy are used for a PTSD diagnosis?

Therapies

Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)

  • Focuses on how trauma has changed your beliefs about yourself, others, and the world around you.
  • 12-session weekly therapy that gives you the tools needed to challenge and create healthier beliefs.

Prolonged Exposure (PE)

  • Targets the unprocessed fear and anxiety at the heart of PTSD.
  • In addition to in-session exercises, you will be expected to engage in real-life exposures to previously avoided people, places, and situations to help reduce the fear response.
  • PE typically requires 8-15 weekly sessions.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

  • helps you to process and make sense of upsetting thoughts, feelings, and memories related to a traumatic event.
  • This is done by paying attention to alternating eye movements, physical sensations, or sounds while you call to mind your upsetting memory, thoughts, or feelings until changes occur in the way in which you experience that memory.
  • EMDR is also done on a weekly basis for about 1-3 months.

Written Exposure Therapy (WET)

  • helps you find new ways to think about a traumatic experience and what it means to you through writing about the experience.
  • Writing about what you were thinking and feeling during the event and then talking with your provider about it can help you get relief from your trauma symptoms.
  • WET typically requires 5 weekly sessions.

Present Centered Therapy (PCT)

  • a non-trauma focused therapy.
  • focuses on increasing adaptive responses to current life stressors and difficulties that are directly or indirectly related to trauma or PTSD symptoms.
  • PCT typically requires 10-12 weekly sessions.
