Horizon Health Seminar
Cannabis and the Adolescent Brain
Speaker: Erin Parr-Horlings CASAC, Advanced Practice Clinician
The legal age of cannabis consumption is now 21. What do parents, teachers, and adolescents need to know about the impact of cannabis use on the developing brain? Which youth are most at risk for developing a cannabis use disorder or experiencing the emergence of mental health disorders in connection with cannabis use? This presentation will review current research on the effects of cannabis use during critical periods of brain development ( ages 15 – 24 ). Commonly held weed “myths” about the perceived safety of cannabis will be demystified. Lastly, solutions and strategies will be offered to parents and other concerned loved ones on how to talk to youth about the risks and benefits of cannabis.
