About the Organization
The Erie County Department of Health, through its Office of Harm Reduction, affirms its commitment to advancing health equity, dignity, and compassion for all members of our community. Stigma related to substance use, mental health, and other health conditions remains a significant barrier to care, recovery, and overall well-being. Addressing stigma is essential to improving public health outcomes and strengthening our community.
The Anti-Stigma Coalition was established to bring together community partners, service providers, individuals with lived and living experience, and public health leaders to challenge harmful narratives and promote evidence-based, person-centered approaches to health. We recognize that stigma—whether structural, interpersonal, or internalized—can discourage individuals from seeking care and can undermine effective prevention and treatment efforts.
Our work is grounded in harm reduction principles, which prioritize safety, respect, and autonomy while meeting people where they are. By fostering collaboration, education, and community engagement, the Anti-Stigma Coalition seeks to reduce discrimination, promote understanding, and support policies and practices that uphold the dignity and humanity of every individual.
The Erie County Department of Health remains committed to leading and supporting efforts that create a more informed, compassionate, and inclusive community. Through the Anti-Stigma Coalition, we will continue to work toward a future where all people are treated with respect and have equitable access to the resources and care they need to thrive.
